چکیده
Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare peripartum complication with the sudden onset of haemodynamic instability, respiratory failure and coagulopathy during labour or soon after delivery. A 31-year-old woman with amniotic fluid embolism was treated with vasopressors, inotropes, intravenous fluid, tranexamic acid and ventilatory support. Assessment of respiratory impairment was made using conventional chest X-ray, computed tomography and electrical impedance tomography. The potential for electrical impedance tomography to improve monitoring and guide respiratory therapy is explored. CR Camporota L et al. Assessment of regional lung mechanics with electrical impedance tomography can determine the requirement for ECMO in patients with ARDS Intensive Care Med. 2012 Dec; 38(12); 208687. The authors present two cases of patients with severe ARDS to describe how assessment of regional changes in compliance using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) may assist in the ventilator strategy prior to or during ECMO.

Breathing moves volumes of electrically insulating air into and out of the lungs, producing conductivity changes which can be seen by electrical impedance tomography. It has thus been apparent, since the early days of EIT research, that imaging of ventilation could become a key clinical application of EIT. In this paper, we review the current state and future prospects for lung EIT, by a synthe...
متن کاملApplications of Electrical Impedance Tomography in Neurology
Introduction: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive technique utilized in various medical applications, including brain imaging and other neurological diseases. Recognizing the physiological and anatomical characteristics of organs based on their electrical properties is one of the main applications of EIT, as each variety of tissue structure has its own electrical characteris...

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free tool to monitor regional changes in ventilation. This report describes, for the first time, that unilateral atelectasis in an extremely low birth weight infant results in a loss of regional ventilation measured by EIT in the affected lung. Conclusion: EIT is currently the most promising technique to monitor regional lung ae...
متن کاملElectrical impedance tomography and Calderón’s problem
We survey mathematical developments in the inverse method of Electrical Impedance Tomography which consists in determining the electrical properties of a medium by making voltage and current measurements at the boundary of the medium. In the mathematical literature this is also known as Calderón’s problem from Calderón’s pioneer contribution [23]. We concentrate this article around the topic of...
متن کاملAssessment of regional ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome by electrical impedance tomography.
Mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) incurs a risk of ventilator-associated lung injury (VALI) from inhomogeneous conditions and different properties of dependent and non-dependent lung regions at risk of atelectasis and overdistension, respectively. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) offers regional ventilation assessment to optimise treatment with mechanical...
